Barre Stretch is one of the fastest-growing fitness classes for women in Calgary - and it’s not hard to see why. It combines the sculpting strength of barre training with the restorative benefits of deep stretching, creating a workout that tones, lengthens, and refreshes your body. At Heels by Iryna in East Village ( Our Second Location ), our Barre Stretch program is designed exclusively for women who want to feel strong, confident, and connected to their bodies.
If you’re preparing for your first class, you might be wondering: what exactly should I bring? Let’s explore what Barre Stretch is, the benefits backed by science, and how to show up ready for success.

What is Barre Stretch?
Barre Stretch brings together two powerful methods:
Barre training uses small, controlled, ballet-inspired movements that target the core, glutes, and thighs with incredible precision. These low-impact, high-intensity exercises create strength and endurance while improving posture and balance. Scientific research shows that isometric holds, like those used in barre, can build strength and enhance muscle tone - even without heavy weights.
Stretching is the other half of the class. Through guided static and dynamic stretches, your muscles lengthen, your joints gain mobility, and tension melts away. Studies have shown that regular stretching improves flexibility and range of motion in as little as two weeks, helping you feel lighter, looser, and more graceful in your everyday movement.
Together, barre and stretching create a unique workout that sculpts, strengthens, and restores all in one session.
Why Women Love Barre Stretch
Barre Stretch is designed with women’s bodies in mind. The targeted lower-body exercises lift and firm the glutes while tightening the thighs. The constant core engagement helps create a slimmer, more defined waistline. Adding stretching ensures muscles recover properly, keeping the body balanced and preventing tightness.
Over time, women notice improved posture from stronger back and shoulder muscles, greater flexibility from consistent stretching, and even long-term bone health benefits from weight-bearing barre sequences. Perhaps most importantly, Barre Stretch boosts confidence. Women leave class not just stronger and more flexible, but empowered and recharged.
What to Bring to Class
Your first class doesn’t require much, but a few essentials will set you up for success. Wear fitted activewear, leggings or shorts with a breathable top - so you can move freely and your instructor can check your form. Grip socks are highly recommended, as they provide extra stability at the barre, though barefoot is also an option.
A water bottle is a must, since you’ll be sweating more than you expect in a low-impact class. Some women also like to bring a small towel for comfort. We provide mats at the studio, but if you prefer your own, feel free to bring it.
Most importantly, bring an open mind and a positive attitude. Every movement can be adjusted for beginners, so you’ll feel supported no matter your starting point.
What to Expect in Class
A typical Barre Stretch session begins with a warm-up to awaken your muscles. From there, you’ll flow into barre exercises that sculpt your thighs, glutes, and core with pulses, holds, and small controlled movements. Afterward, guided stretching targets the hips, hamstrings, and back, leaving you longer, looser, and more mobile. Each class ends with breath work and relaxation, so you leave feeling refreshed inside and out.
The Results You’ll See
Consistency is the key. With two to three classes per week, you’ll start to see changes in how your body looks and feels. Your glutes will feel firmer and lifted. Your waistline will look slimmer as your core endurance builds. Flexibility will increase, posture will improve, and everyday movement will feel easier. Long-term, you’ll notice stronger bones, healthier joints, and a confident, empowered mindset that carries into every part of your life.
